TINTYPES

Please note: All of our tintypes are in good condition unless specifically noted. Most unframed tintypes listed in good condition will have some level of surface wear which can be things like modest scratches or bends. We also offer some that are in excellent condition with little if any wear. A few of our current items are scanned, and as a result, they look greenish and grainy. They are not green or grainy. We are working to replace the problem scans. Most of the tintypes we have are 1/6 plate which are approximately 2 1/2" x 3 1/2". If one of our tintypes is larger or smaller than a 1/6 plate, we will specify it. IMPORTANT: Images are generally displayed here larger than actual size to show detail.

RUSSIAN TROIKA DRIVERS 19TH CENTURY. Very unusual subject in a nice 1/6 plate. A troika is a carriage drawn by a team of three horses abreast. Size 2.25" x 3.5". Excellent condition. $50

1/6th PLATE OF A LITTLE GIRL WITH HER CAT. Delightful image. The cat did move slightly, but it's amazing he sat still at all for the photo. Size 2.5" x 3.5". There are some bends, but this is a really fun piece. $65

1/6th PLATE OF MOM HOLDING BABY ON DONKEY. Sharp and clear with great contrast. Very funny. Today, we'd need a donkey safety seat with shoulder harness. Size 2.4" x 3.5". Condition is excellent. $65

1/4th PLATE - WOMEN WITH VIOLIN. A terrific music image in excellent condition. Size approx. 3-1/8" x 4-1/8". Our scan gives this tintype a greenish, grainy appearance, but it is actually a nice gray and is quite clear. No bends and just very minimal scratches. $75

1/6th PLATE – LITTLE BOY WITH BIRD. Delightful image of a really cute little boy with a bird at his feet. We suspect it is a stuffed bird. The boy has a wonderful expression. Great little suit and shoes. Nice subtle tinting of the boy’s cheeks. Size 2.5” x 4" in its original paper holder. You can see from the detail in the scans how clear this tintype is. Nice contrast. Condition is very good with no bends and just very minimal scratches. $65

Tintype of Lady with a Great Shawl. Very nice 1/6 plate. Terrific look at her shawl. $45

Tintype of Young Boy and Drum C.1860-70. Superb 1/6 plate of a young boy and his snare drum. Pristine condition in a paper frame which must have been protected in an album. It is not glued into the frame. Imprint on back of paper appears to say “Frede Photo Gallery.” Excellent contrast and particularly sharp. $125
